Back to Basics this Saturday Night!! New Podcast!!

On Saturday April 16, we are trying something brand new for Back to Basics. We are paring up some of Jackson's best MCs with a live band put together specially for this show. It's gonna be a a chill night with an organic vibe, just rappers rockin with bass and drums, stripped down to the essence. This isn't going to be a freestyle fest (although there will be some of that). Instead, you will get to hear 5th Child, James Crow, and PyInfamous adapt their styles and songs to a unique situation. It's going to be a fun night, and you'll understand why these guys are some of the finest Jackson has to offer. Click the link in the events bar on the side for more information and to link up with the facebook event page.

In honor of this show, our man ZeeDubb hooked up a brand spanking new podcast featuring all the artists you will hear Saturday night. There is, as always, a few surprises thrown in too. On top of all that, ZeeDubb intersperses the music with a lecture by Megan Stewart on the meaning of blackness. It's some though provoking stuff. But, you have to come to the show to hear "Cripple Fight."

Click here to get the podcast. You can choose either AAC format (with pictures and track listing) or mp3 (without). You can get with this, you can get with that.Support Mississippi hip hop!!!

Coming up soon: an artist to artist interview with the brothers of the first family of Jackson hip hop, 5th Child and James Crow. Also, we'll have a full write up on 5th Child's new record and the debut record from Evan I Tribe, featuring KT, everyone's favorite guitar wielding soul brother in Jackson. Stay tuned!!!!

Lyrics Born in Jackson, MS April 9

Hip hop innovator and impresario Lyrics Born will be in Jackson this upcoming Saturday to rock a show at Martin's. Lyrics Born got his start as one half of Latyrx, with Lateef the Truth Speaker. Latyrx, along with Blackalicious and DJ Shadow, made up the Solesides crew, which later became Quannum Projects. These guys were at the forefront of the independent hip hop scene in the 1990s, and for those of us old enough to remember, this music had a profound impact on our tastes as well as the larger hip hop scene in general.

With that in mind, I'm gonna post up some videos a do a little history lesson on Lyrics Born. He recently told me that his new album is like nothing he did before, and that makes sense, considering that has been a trait of his career from the jump. So, sit back and relax and follow the Lyrics Born journey.

In the early days, official videos were rare for the duo, but there is one for "Say That," which is a great song off their debut album Latyrx. Also, check out the title track from this album below, although its not an official video. You don't need the visuals to distract you anyway, cause the lyrics are almost too much.

Do you remember the first time you heard that shit? A lot of people I know spent many a long nights trying to piece together what this song was about. Unreal.

This next one is a song Latyrx did with Herbaliser. It is their "manifesto," and again the wordplay and complex lyrics are just ridiculous.

By the early 2000s, Lyrics Born started focusing more heavily on his solo career, and put out Later That Day in 2004. Here is a love video of the song "Calling Out," featuring his lovely wife Joyo Velarde on singing duties.

In 2005, he released Same Shit, Different Day, that featured a few new tracks and some remixes. Here is the official video for "I Changed My Mind," the Stereo MC's remix.

Even though, he released some other things between 2005 and now, but for time's sake, I'm gonna move forward to his most recent release As U Were and the official video for "Pushed Aside, Pulled Apart." To bring things full circle, this song reunites him with his Latyrx partner, Lateef.

Alright, hope you have enjoyed this little history lesson. It was fun to do and brought back a lot of memories. Come out to Martin's this Saturday to see Lyrics Born, along with New Orleans funk masters Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, electronic artist Boombox, and may more. The show is a benefit for Trail of Honor, which supports American veterans. The show starts at 5PM and will take up two stages, one outside and one inside. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com. They will be $25 the day of the show.

New Podcast and a few other things

What's up everyone. Sorry for the delay in posting. We are back now with a fresh update.

First off, we got everyone's favorite short, quirky rapper 7even:Thirty coming back home to Jackson for a special show Saturday night, April 9, at Hal and Mal's. This show is an afterparty for the Crossroads Film Festival and 7even will be rocking the stage with Taylor Hildebrand. Check out 7even's newest video for "Twenty-Eleven." Leave him some feedback, he loves to hear from his fans.

Next, a lot is being said about Bib K.R.I.T.'s new mixtape, Return of 4eva, with words such as classic being thrown around quite casually. While it is a good record, it is out of the realm of this blog to discuss if it is a classic or not. But, we would like everyone to understand that K.R.I.T. is not the only person putting in down for Mississippi. Our state has a large number of amazing artists that rep our state hard. Don't sleep on them.

Our man ZeeDubb has hooked up a new podcast featuring Mississippi hip hop artists including SlimmPusha, Eclipse, Big Sant, Ulogy, Jackson & 7evenThirty, Trumpcard, Rashad Street, Smokin Aces, Yung Nut, Big KRIT and a collaboration from Rashad St., A.V., ZeeDubb, and James Crow. It's hot.

Click here for the newest podcast.

Speaking of ZeeDubb, on May 12th he is hosting a massive hip hop show in Vicksburg, MS featuring some of Mississippi's finest. Check out the flyer below and click the link on the side for more information.

And finally, we hope to see you all come out to The Blast this Sunday at North Midtown Arts Center in Jackson from 6-10PM. All kinds of DJs from a wide-range of genres will be spinning for a hip and diverse crowd. Come out and party with the cool kids.

Mississippi Heat Vol. 1 Available Now!

This weekend marked the release of Mississippi Heat Vol.1 hosted by DJ PM and SlimmPusha. The mixtape features all Mississippi talent. Followers of this blog will see some names you are very familiar with as well as some folks you don't know. Click the link at the bottom of this post to download. Before you do that, check out this interview with DJ PM.

What is the meaning behind the title Mississippi Heat?

The title Mississippi Heat is a double entendre. It's meant to play on the fact that being a southern state, the climate makes Mississippi one of the hottest states in America, so by naming it that I’m attempting to let the world know Mississippi is one of the hottest states for music also.

How did you go about selecting artists for the mix?

The selection process was quite simple actually. Via Twitter, Facebook, and attending a few shows in the Jackson area, I reached out to Mississippi artists and asked them to send me 3 or 4 tracks and picked the one I liked the most. That and of course the first people selected were the people that have been rocking with me from day 1.

What brought you and SlimmPusha together? What does he bring to the mix? What else do you guys have planned?

Man what brought us together is my eye for talent. Mark my words SlimmPusha is one of the best party MCs I’ve eva heard and I've been to clubs from N.O. to Jamaica. That and been seeing his work and grind for a while. We been chopping it up at parties for a while and when I first got the idea for the mixtape I knew I wanted him on Volume 1. Man Slimm brings sheer comedy to the project. I mean his energy and work ethic is crazy too. Perfectionist like me so that worked out well. What’s next for us TAKING OVER THE WORLD. You know were talking of Volume 2. That and he's focusing on his music also so I believe we'll all ways work together in some kinda way.

What do you think about hip hop in Mississippi? What is our next step forward?

Hip-Hop in Mississippi is a hidden treasure. I mean don’t get me wrong, its a lot of coal covering up the diamonds, but Mississippi hip-hop is a treasure that I’m glad to be a part of. Our next step is spreading out our music. It used to be getting everybody on the same page but now everybody is on the TEAM MISSISSIPPI page and now its getting the music to the world. That’s what I’m tryna do with this mixtape. I think the biggest thing for us is learning how to legitimize our business and put out good quality music, because we've had some good music stolen out of Mississippi. Also I think we need to end the DJ-artist beef. Too much of that going on. If 1 DJ don’t wanna play yo music, find one that will. The biggest thing we need to do is GRIND HARD!!!

Tell me about the work you do with 5th Child. How do you guys work off of each other?

Man 5th Child is my dude. I been knowing 5th all my life before I was DJing and before he was rapping. Man me and 5th work well together because its not just like some random dude I’m DJing for or I’m not some random dude he engineers for. We were friends before this and I feel that’s what makes everything we do so great. 5th inspires me to put my heart into my music cuz he all ways does. Me and 5th got some stuff in store so stay tuned.

Is there anything else you want to say to the people?

Wanna just shout out and thank everyone who was apart of helping me make this mixtape: Rahkua for opening up the mixtape in such a classic way and all the support; 5th for engineering; Slimm for hosting; Ayatti of Gifted and Graceful Designs for artwork and photoshoot; Ski for printing the CD's; Patrick Guitar Boy and Tenisha Hayes for the encouraging words and support; Xclusiv for printing the covers and everybody that put up the cover on their Twitter and Facebook; anybody who re-tweeted, said a prayer, or contributed in any kind of way. Gotta give a big shout out to Silent G and back2basicsjackon for interviewing me. Innovative MusIK.
